In France aviators were awarded their Aviator's Certificate (Pilot's Licence) by l'Aéro Club de France.Until the end of December 1909, l'Aéro-Club had issued unnumbered licences without examination. Sixteen had been issued up until a list was published in alphabetic order (more or less) on 1 January 1910. After the allocation of numbers two further licences were issued in December 1909 prior to the publication of the initial list and so added with subsequent numbers.
Licences were subsequently allocated by passing tests, although the registration dates of licences were often delayed.
